The Cavapoo has become an increasingly popular hybrid dog breed in recent years. This cross between the King Charles Cavalier and Poodle produces a friendly, playful, and affectionate companion. In this article, we’ll explore what makes the Cavapoo such a great pet.

The Cavapoo A Guide to This Playful and Affectionate Breed

Temperament of the Cavapoo

The typical Cavapoo temperament combines the best traits from both parent breeds. Cavapoos tend to be very social, outgoing, and eager to please. They form strong bonds with their human families and crave attention and playtime.

Cavapoos are highly intelligent dogs. The Poodle’s smarts combined with the Cavalier’s devotion makes training Cavapoos a pleasant experience. With positive reinforcement methods, these dogs pick up on commands quickly. Their aim to please makes them more obedient than many small breed dogs.

These hybrid dogs also tend to be gentle and patient.  Cavapoos usually get along well with children, other pets, and strangers. Their affectionate personality makes them sensitive to scolding or punishment during training.

Overall, the Cavapoo is friendly, playful, and eager to bond with their owners. They make excellent family companions when provided with daily exercise and attention. The Cavapoo temperament suits most households looking for an intelligent, loving small dog.

Size of the Cavapoo

As a crossbreed dog, Cavapoos can vary significantly in size. Here at Choice Paws we have small Cavalier moms and use a toy poodle as the  when breeding F1 generations. This pairing allows us maintain a smaller size in our puppies compared to standard parents.  Our F1b or multigenerational Cavapoos start with one of our beautiful dams and pair her with a toy poodle or Cavapoo stud that best compliments her strengths.

Prospective owners should discuss expected adult sizes with the breeder when choosing a Cavapoo puppy. Those wanting a very small or very large Cavapoo can select pairings that will produce their desired size. For most families, a playful pint-sized or mid-sized Cavapoo is the perfect cuddly companion at home.

Coat Types of the Cavapoo

The Cavapoo coat is one of the breed’s most distinguishing features. Since the Poodle and Cavaliers  have very different coat textures, Cavapoos can inherit a range of hair types.

Most commonly, Cavapoos have a wavy or loosely curled coat. The hair is thicker than the Cavalier’s silky fur but not as dense and wooly as the Poodle’s tight curls. Length ranges from medium to long. A wavy or curly Cavapoo coat requires regular brushing and trimming.

Some Cavapoos have smoother, straighter hair resembling the Cavalier parent. These coats tend to shed more than curly or wavy coats. They need less intensive grooming but seasonal shedding is heavier. These dogs are usually not furnished ( lack the furnishing genes or are weak) poor breeding practices or incomplete testing of parents are the cause. Here at Choice Paws all of our puppies carry at least one furnishing gene and most of them two. Cavaliers are not furnished so the poodle must supply that gene.

No matter the exact coat texture, Cavapoos are low- to non-shedding overall. Their Poodle ancestry gives them light shedding that is less aggravating for owners with allergies. Daily brushing removes loose hair and prevents mats from forming in longer coats.

Cavapoo coats come in a variety of colors. Black, white, chestnut, apricot, grey, and tricolored are all common Cavapoo colors. Sometimes the coat is one solid shade, while other dogs have accent colors on areas like the face, paws, chest, or tail tip.

What Makes the Cavapoo Special?

The Cavapoo may seem like an unlikely hybrid combination at first. But the deliberate crossing of these two purebreds produces some very endearing traits in Cavapoo puppies. Here are a few things that make Cavapoos such special companions:

  • Hypoallergenic coats: The Poodle’s low-shedding genetics give the Cavapoo minimally-shedding fur. This makes them a great choice for allergy sufferers.
  • Happy temperament: Few breeds equal the Cavapoo’s zest for life. They relish playtime but also enjoy snuggling on laps.
  • Eager to train: Cavapoos pick up on training quickly thanks to intelligence inherited from both parent breeds. Their desire to please makes teaching good manners a breeze.
  • Great with kids: Gentle, friendly, and playful, the Cavapoo gets along wonderfully with children. They make an ideal first puppy for families.
  • Perfect pint-sized pet: Weighing under 25 pounds, Cavapoos are the right size for many homes and lifestyles. They don’t require a lot of space indoors or out. Choice Paws takes it a step further breeding The cavapoo dog breed that can easily travel on airplanes. We strive for puppies under the 20 lb size recommendations and average 10-15 lbs. We believe this is the perfect size for these cuddly pups.

From their engaging temperament to their cute curly coats, it’s easy to see why the Cavapoo dog breed has become such a sought-after hybrid breed. They make devoted and lively family companions for those wanting all the endearing traits of a small dog in one adorable package.
